At P.S. 76Q, we are committed to helping every child become a confident, successful reader. This year, our schoolwide instructional focus is on reading fluency and reading comprehension through Next Generation Reading Standard R3.

What is Reading Fluency?

​

Reading fluency is the ability to read accurately, smoothly, and with expression. Fluent readers can recognize words automatically and focus their attention on understanding what they are reading rather than figuring out each word. Research and our school data show that strengthening fluency helps students become stronger readers overall. 

 

What is Next Generation Reading Standard R3?

​

Reading Standard R3 asks students to think deeply about:

• Characters and their traits

• Important events in a story

• How characters respond to challenges

• How characters, settings, and events are connected

 

As students grow, they move from identifying basic story elements to analyzing how characters' actions influence events and how events shape the story. Developing these skills helps students become thoughtful readers and prepares them for success on classroom assessments and state tests. 

 

How Families Can Help at Home

Support Reading Fluency

✅ Have your K-2 child read aloud for 10-15 minutes each day; upper-grade students can read for 30-45 minutes.

✅ Encourage your child to reread favorite books, poems, or short passages. Repeated reading builds confidence and smoothness.

✅ Model fluent reading by reading aloud to your child and showing expression, pacing, and attention to punctuation.

✅ Listen for smooth reading rather than speed. The goal is to sound like talking, not racing through words.

Support Reading Comprehension (R3)

While reading together, ask questions such as:

• Who is the main character? What do you learn about them?

• What challenge or problem does the character face?

• How does the character respond?

• What important events happen in the story?

• How did one event lead to another?

• How did the character change from the beginning to the end of the story?

For older children, encourage them to explain their thinking and use direct or inferred details from the text to support their answers.

 

Working Together for Student Success

Throughout the school year, teachers will provide targeted instruction, intervention support, and lots of opportunities for students to practice both fluency and comprehension skills. By working together at school and at home, we can help all children become stronger, more confident readers who understand and enjoy what they read.
